Who are the operators on Silk Road?

All the block trains are operated by the “platform companies”. All the platform companies are JVs with mixed capital from private shareholders and state-owned companies of the transit countries. Few multinational forwarders claim some of the trains as their own. However, in most cases this is more of a marketing strategy.

Technical basics

  • Block train = 40 platforms going from one origin to one destination.

  • Each platform = 1x40’HQ or 2x20’. Mainly 40’HQ only are used.

  • China, CIS and EU have different width of the rail tracks. Containers are being transloaded twice: China-Kazakhstan border (Dostyk), and Belarus-Poland (Brest). Transloading time is 3-8 hours.

  • Tracking

Tracking is provided by transit railroads. EDI connection is required for real time access. Main forwarders including A.R.T. Logistics are having direct access to railroads’ databases.

  • Equipment and drop-off

The train operators provide containers. Drop off locations are the destination hubs by default. Other locations inside EU are also accepted, quote by request.

Bottlenecks

Operators are trying to keep trains utilisation as high as possible. Eastbound capacity is few times smaller than westbound and therefore requires more advance booking. Westbound space can be booked within 4-7 days in average.
